Dressers & Chests at FurnishMyHome.ca

Dressers and chests are the foundation of bedroom organization. While they are primarily designed for storage, they can complete the look of any room or make a statement in your bedroom decor.

What is the difference between a dresser and chest of drawers?

These bedroom storage mainstays are versatile and hardworking and there are slight differences between a dresser and chest of drawers. Though both contain multiple drawers, they differ in design and size. Either one might be great for your home, depending on your needs.

Dressers – Traditionally, dressers are short, wide and deep. Their spacious drawers are arranged in multiple columns, often with two or three side by side totaling to six or more drawers (up to twelve). Their wide frames offer plenty of room on top and space to attach a mirror. This popular design lets you get dressed in front of the table, hence the term “dresser.”

Chest of Drawers – On the other hand, a chest of drawers is usually tall and narrow. The most common setup is one column of four to six drawers. Because a chest of drawers tends to be tall, it is not a practical place for a mirror. Instead, its sleek, thin design is meant to take up as little floor space as possible.

Should I get a chest of drawers or dresser?

With the vast selection of storage furniture available, it’s all about choosing what works for you. Those with smaller bedrooms will likely opt for a chest of drawers to save floor space. Storing clothing in a taller piece makes the best use of vertical space, keeping the floor open for other items. However, a shorter chest of drawers, known as a bachelors chest, could double as a nightstand.

For those with plenty of space, a dresser may be better. While dressers are bulky, their larger, wider drawers allow you to stow away more clothing. They are also versatile, the spacious top can be used conveniently to store beauty and hygiene products for your morning routine.
