Why buy a sectional sofa?
The main reason to getting a sectional is quite simple: It offers an ample amount of seating and is perfect for lounging and putting your feet up. Depending on their size, sectionals can offer room for several more people to sit than a conventional sofa can. Most people think that sectionals can work only in large rooms—but that’s not so. Sectionals can really help maximize seating options in smaller spaces, especially when placed in a corner.
What type of sectional should I get?
Choosing the right sectional is actually pretty simple once you have established the space where the sectional will be places. There are three sectional shapes: The U-shape, the L-shape and the Semi-circular shape. So the first step is deciding which configuration is right for your lifestyle.
The best way to figure this out is to draw a floor plan. Draw your room to scale, then cut out some squares at the correct scale and experiment with different combinations. Maybe one side of the sectional needs to be longer because you have the wall space and want the extra seating.
If you’re working with a small space, you might only be able to do a chaise and apartment sofa combo as opposed to a sofa and additional armchairs. Larger spaces allow for a complete pit set, which is a great option to accommodate your family when figuring out seating for your family room or finished basement.
Left or right-arm-facing chaise?
If you’re going with a chaise sectional (and why wouldn’t you, if you have the space?) you’ll need to decide whether you want the chaise to be left-facing or right-facing. In other words, when you’re facing the front of the sectional, which side should the chaise go on?
If one side of the sectional will be against a wall, it’s a no-brainer: The chaise will likely go on the open side to take advantage of its multiple access points. If your sectional is in the middle of the room, however, consider the natural traffic flow of the room as well as the focal points (e.g., should the chaise face the TV?) to make your decision.
Should I get a sectional or two sofas?
If you’re choosing between a sectional or two sofas, it’s safe to assume that your space is large enough to accommodate bigger pieces of furniture. A sectional is a great option if you prefer one piece that can act as focal point in your living room. You then design around it with accent chairs and ottomans if you need more seating for guests. A sofa set consisting of a couch and loveseat is a great option for a medium to large living room that needs seating for up to five guests.
If you prefer the style of a sectional but don’t have the space to fit it, consider an apartment size sectional sofa. These pieces are designed to fit the smallest of living rooms while staying true to the forms of a sectional.
When taking delivery of a sectional
Make sure the pieces of the sectional sofa fit in the pathway of delivery, and that they will fit in doorways, down a set of stairs (especially if there’s a landing with a 90-degree turn) and hallways. The good news is, sectionals can be made of two or more pieces, which allows for easier transporting, and offers a lot of versatility to create a configuration that works for your needs and for your space.
